The early 1990s ‘Riot Grrrl’ movement was a platform for women to rebel against a society they felt offered no validation of women’s experiences. Igniting from a small group wanting to start a ‘girl riot’, it soon gave birth to bands such as Bikini Kill and Heavens to Betsy. Their music expressed feminist and anti-racist viewpoints with personal lyrics that further dealt into topics like rape, incest and eating disorders.
